Restoring the Old. Beautifying the Broken.
We are located in a historic building in downtown New Ulm, MN. Our store’s beginning is a product of a dream and happenstance. For years we visited occasional shops and had discussions about opening our own shop and sharing our love of the old with others. We were contacted about a building vacancy and things just fell into place. We signed a lease and trusted that the rest would fall into place. From that wonderul building the business grew and we now own a building in downtown New Ulm that offers us the space we need to create, refinish and teach. The building seamlessly brings our love of all things old and worn together perfectly. We worked hard, filled our store with things we love and have loved every part of the journey. We are passionate about decorating, love working with customers and enjoy teaching others about using the Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint and Fusion Paint Products.
I am a therapist and a self taught DIYer. I enjoy decorating and believe that with a little
creativity, you can make just about anything beautiful. I have always loved antiques and have refinishing
in my genes. I have many memories of working alongside my mother on projects and finding furniture
for my grandfather to reconstruct and refinish. I love junk, and finding new ways to use old things. I find
refinishing and decorating to be therapeutic and love going on treasure hunts and to auctions to find
new things for the store and for my home. I have always dreamed of having a store with my mom and
absolutely love sharing our passion with our customers.
Here is a little about me and what I love. I work in the I.T. field. I work in IT but I am definitely not a GEEK. I don’t get all giddy and excited over a new operating system. I enjoy my line of work. It serves its purpose, paying the bills. My real passion is in creating beauty and encouraging people to create a beautiful space to live in and to love their homes.
I have created a warm and inviting home for my family and friends to enjoy with me. My home is place that invites people to come in and relax and enjoy themselves. My furniture is old and dinged up; it shows its age, which is why I chose it for my home. I don’t want fussy elegant fragile items in my home. I raised a son who I believe took great pleasure in helping me create that timeworn look.
I enjoy working with my hands to create and restore. I have always been a hands on type of person. I have more time than money so out of necessity I have had to learn how re-use and repurpose. I like to change things in my home frequently; I like to mix things up. When I purchase something I try to visualize that item in several areas of my home. I need items to be versatile so I can move items around. It amazes me how just changing things around can transform your home. The problem with changing things is that domino effect it creates. Remember that even small changes can have a huge impact.
I love the hunt! It is the thrill of going junking and coming back with a vehicle full of items to be repurposed or restored and loved again. It really gets me excited when I find an awesome deal and my mind starts visualizing how to transform it. The whole process is in my blood.
I have out of necessity had to learn how to do many DIY projects. I have loved the learning curve; well not always…I have had some DIY fails. But most of them have been successes. I will share some of them with you.
I have been so blessed to have a daughter who shares my love of all things old and worn. To have that same daughter start a business with me has been a dream come true. There are only two things that have been a constant in my life; one I have always wanted a family and I have always loved all things old. I feel extremely blessed to have both in my life.
I carry my love of creating a beautiful home to the exterior of my house. There is nothing more beautiful than a garden filled with old fashion flowers, coral bells, fox glove, black eyed Susan’s are a few of my favorite. I find it so relaxing to sit outside on a gorgeous sunny summer day and enjoy nature in all its beauty. When weather permits I love sitting on my porch in the evening and enjoying all the beauty that surrounds me.
