During a recent furniture pick up and treasure hunt we found this piece. It wasn’t pretty but I saw potential and LOVED all of the drawers. I had absolutely no idea what I wanted to do with it or where it would go but I knew that I wanted it and that it would turn out to be a really cute piece. There were doubters (Ahem…Theresa) but in the end I think it had a pretty cool transformation. Here is a before of the piece. I’m not really sure what the piece was meant to be but it was used for storage of art things I’m pretty sure due to the crayon marks in the drawers and wrappers that I found
I almost forgot to take a before so this is one where I was already starting. I knew that since the wood was raw that I wanted to keep the top wood and I knew that I wanted to use a stain to make the top darker. Whenever possible, we try to keep the tops of our pieces wood. We like the dimension that it gives to the piece and you can’t beat a wood top in terms of durability. I have been wanting to do another piece using Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint Curio as a stain and decided that this piece was it. To use milk paint as a stain you just add 3 parts water to 1 part paint. Here you can see a close up of how the stain looks when it is applied. The best part about using the Milk Paint as a stain is that it has no smell like regular stain does.
I decided that I wanted to use both Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint and Fusion paint. I chose Prairie Sunset as my color for the base. I did not have to do any prep work to the piece due to it being raw wood and with Fusion paint you do not have to do a protective top coat.
I did do some shading with antiquing wax to give it a little more depth. I put hemp oil on the top of the piece to seal the milk paint. I added knobs and here it is….
I don’t have a place for it yet so I don’t have a better “after picture”. I’ve tried it in a few places and I’m thinking it might go back to its original purpose and hold my art supplies in my office at work. I had fun with this one and the total transformation took less than 1.5 hours. Hope you all had a great weekend, it was wonderful to see some of you this weekend for the sale.
